Neuromuscular Re-Education Therapy (NMT) a system of specific therapies that achieves and maintain balance (Homeostasis) between your musculoskeletal and nervous system. Addressing your chronic pain patterns, stress and postural distortions that debilitate and greatly reduce your quality of life. Appropriate treatment requires lengthening of what is short, strengthening of what is weak, and mobilization of what is restricted (blocked), deactivation of trigger points, reintegration of functional patterns of use.

This therapeutic  approach specifically treats muscles/muscle fibers, tendons, and nerves. To reduce or eliminate trigger points, adhesions and scar tissue. Injury to these tissues can cause unnecessary stress to the spine.

Injury to these tissues can cause unnecessary stress to your spine and may interfere with the body's ability to function normally.

Let me explain, when you injure a muscle it weakens it, and your brain starts using other muscles to compensate.

"The treatments themselves do not 'cure' the condition; they simply restore the body's self-healing ability."

-Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O.

The “catch” is that once this compensation pattern forms, it can become your “new normal” way of doing something and it can persist indefinitely, in spite of all your efforts.

It’s “programmed in” to your Nervous System – and treating your muscles all the usual ways often has little or no effect on it.

It becomes this mystifying pattern of weakness, tension, aches and pains that often feel like an “Invisible Wall” you can’t seem to get over in your rehab efforts.

Neuromuscular Retraining can help resolve this, not by trying to “plow” through this invisible wall – but by patiently “showing” your Nervous System that all its compensations are no longer necessary – (That there is no wall.)

It uses a precise and gentle system of muscle testing to help your brain remember how to coordinate and reconnect with each muscle that has been weakened by injury or repetitive overuse fatigue.

What you experience is:A sudden increase of coordination and strength in muscles that have resisted your strengthening efforts,

A decrease and later disappearance of all your strange compensation tension,

And the end of your aches and pain (Your muscles working properly again!)

Overview of your Nervous System

Bones, joints and muscles function together as the musculoskeletal system. However, this system cannot function in a harmonious fashion on its own. The nervous system role is directing movement of the body and is pertinent to muscle contraction. The nervous system is made up of nerve cells known as neurons. Neurons carry electrical signal known as nerve impulse (proprioceptive feedback) that send a flow of information that direct movement.

The Importance of Good Posture
The word posture means position. The position that a person’s body is important because holding the body still in a position places stresses on the tissues of the body.

Good Posture is healthy balanced and efficient so it does not place Excessive stresses on the tissues of the body

Bad posture
is unhealthy its not balanced and not efficient; so it places excessive stresses on the tissues of the body.
 Pain-Spasm-Pain Cycle
A vicious cycle that starts with the pain in the body caused by trauma or one major increasing occurrence repetitive strain injuries.

First, muscles tighten around the injury, reducing the normal circulation necessary for healing. In addition, scar tissue begins to build in an attempt to repair tears in muscles and tendons. But scar tissue tends to be weaker and more rigid than healthy tissue, and can restrict the normal action of the muscles and tendons. When repetitive movements are continued, this tissue is likely to re-tear, causing more inflammation and swelling.
1
A cycle of pain and injury can begin, leading to decreased range of motion and further reduction in circulation.
Muscles weaken because they are painful to use and other 'compensatory' muscles attempt to pick up the workload, often becoming overused themselves.

To make matters worse, swelling from inflammation and scar tissue may also press on nerves, causing additional pain and dysfunction.
Help is often needed to stop the cycle

What we address, why
First we do a Postural Assessment— a observation and evaluation of muscular imbalance and dysfunction.

Treatment
ManualTissue Mobilization techniques-appropriate soft tissue techniques like Myofacial release, muscle energy techniques and a variety of modification and variations of these aimed at decreasing spasm and ischemia (lack of blood flow to soft tissues), enhancing drainage of the soft tissues and deactivating trigger points

Stretching
—appropriate active, passive and self applied stretching methods to restore normal flexibility

Restoring normal proprioceptive function and coordination
– by use of standard rehabilitation approaches.

How it works
Our concern is with the muscles that are tight when they should be relaxed (the resting tone of a muscle) This resting tone is set by the neurons of the gamma motor system that resides in the brainstem and works without conscious control and orders to tighten musculature. Whether its due to injury or poor posture the motor system may create muscle facilitation (tone is set to high) or muscle inhibition (tone is set to low). The lack of proportion of this facilitation/inhibition pattern is that it predisposes the body to postural distortion patterns.

Scientific Proven Results
Based on recognized physiological laws and Principles. NMT helps to prevent future chronic pain conditions by effectively dealing with the cause of the problem and eliminating it. It’s shown in scientific literature that over 80% of the pain is coming from soft tissue injuries, and over 74% is directly attributed to Trigger Points.

How is it different
It is distinguished from other types of massage in that pressure is applied with the aim of normalizing muscle tone. Pain can manifest itself as ischemia, trigger points, nerve compression, biomechanical (muscular activity) dysfunction and postural distortion. The quest is how to release it appropriately. Session are based on treatment outcome to Re-educate the Neuromuscular Junction in order to achieve postural balance, relieve biomechanical strain, and normalize muscle tone.
