Any of the above symptoms can cause a snowball effect which can not only cause low back pain but o
ther musculoskeletal imbalances. In this article we will discuss the primary hip flexor the psoas.

You may ask why my psoas is tight?

The psoas muscle tends to shorten (tighten) due to prolonged sitting and it stays shortened even when you stand up. Now that the psoas muscle is shortened other muscles are now working harder to keep you upright. If the psoas muscle is not treated, this can lead to chronic low back pain.

 

Why is the psoas important?

The psoas has two primary functions:
1. When the leg is free to move, as when walking, it is a strong flexor of the thigh at the hip joint.
2. When the leg is planted firmly, as when standing or sitting still, it bends the lower spine forward. This action is used to maintain the balance of the trunk when sitting.

Once the psoas has become chronically shortened to the point where your back aches, my experience is that you require professional help. Unfortunately, many professionals concentrate on the back and ignore treating the psoas on the front. In my practice I apply protocols that not only specifically treat the psoas muscle but also address the compensating muscles.

What can I do to correct this

First thing is to schedule an appointment with Mara Nicandro NMT As part of your first session I provide an individualized postural assessment to identify shortened muscle. We can then treat the psoas muscle and other muscles that have been affected.

What about self help or alternatives? Considerable skill and care is required to release a tight psoas and the associated fascial covering while not injuring the abdominal organs, so I recommend you seek the help of an experienced professional. Don't just ask a friend to push into your belly!
